2008 events are go for launch

Having just come back from the Founders and Funders Dinner in Toronto, it's time to get ready for the big Launch Party Vancouver 3 event this Friday. Maura and crew have pulled this together in record time, and it looks like Sun is going to be doing a big kickoff. What with the purchase of MySQL and supporting local tech communities like this, I'm getting more and more interested in looking closely at Sun.

Then, in 2 weeks time, we're doing DemoCamp Vancouver 05. I'll get the Facebook event sent out today, so watch for that. We need both battledeck submissions and people to demo...fill out the wiki or get in touch.

Then it's Web Directions North next week, which I'll be speaking at.

Whew! 2008 events are off with a bang. Here's some other stuff I'm tracking -- in no way complete or comprehensive.

I'll likely come back and update that event list in a bit...

A lot of Facebook Apps from Vancouver on display. Mark Mayo from Joyent is giving a lighting talk. A Facebook rep *might* surface...

Sun and Startups

I'm very interested in Project Darkstar from Sun too. http://www.projectdarkstar.com/

I was considering organizing a Startup Bootcamp. I was going to invite founders from a couple startups that I know plus a lawyer and accountant who have set up the business side of a startup. The general idea would be to get from 0 to 100 km/h as fast as possible and try to spit out version 0.1 of a product with business infrastructure in place.

By the way, you've been out of town for a little bit, so I guess you haven't heard that I tendered my resignation and I'm starting work on my startup.

Excellent

I think the business infrastructure is actually less hard. Those can be templated. Figuring out the (solid) ideas and doing all of the marketing, collateral, graphics, and pushing out some bit of development all over a weekend is probably enough of a challenge :P

Duane's April timeline sounds good. There are a lot of events between now and then...

I haven't spent enough time looking at the Startup Weekends that have already happened to see what we can learn...we should set up some planning sessions (i.e. beer drinking) to talk about this :P

And yes, I had heard that you were pulling the trigger at some point. Congrats on quitting the day job!

thanks for the overview!

Hi Boris...

Thanks for the list -- there was one there I hadn't heard about! And, thanks for the Third Tuesday promotion, too! It's going to be a heck of a great time (as always) -- We've really got some great traction now.

meeting

I was talking to James about this.  We were gonna get together probably next week sometime with you and talk about some of this stuff.  I'll set something up via email and we can start the drinking.. err, planning.
