Trevor Jones: Obliquity and the Pursuit of Excellence

Trevor continues to put out some great writing:

…a business is a human system. The most successful businesses of all time have been those pursuing excellence through the direction of a visionary manager. The approach to shareholder value is oblique, and the pursuit of excellence, new ideas and innovation is their driving force.

Trevor Jones: Obliquity and the Pursuit of Excellence

FYI, here's the definition for technocracy, the root word for "technocrats". I had to go look it up.

Greg sent around a recent article about the changes at IBM that is perhaps relevant as well.

To me, this touches on outsourcing as well. As the base levels of technology services become commoditized (tech support, coding), you need to focus on the relationship with the customer and the new-new that they can't get elsewhere, that no level of outsourcing can replace.

So, pursue excellence in dealing with your customers, pursue excellence in research, and you'll succeed, albeit obliquely? Sounds good.
