16a - End of First Semester, Christmas Break, Sail to Honolulu

There isn't a big break in the actual yearbook, but Yokohama was the end of the first semester. Slightly less than half the students left as well as some of the staff and crew. Some students flew home for a 2 week break, while others stayed and explored Japan.

When the full semester students returned, we sailed short handed to Honolulu. Some guests joined us to experience the sail. It was a 21 day crossing, most of it in rough weather. We stood 8 - 10 hour watches, and it didn't get warm again until a day or two away from Hawaii.

Chantal joined on as cook, and it was a hectic initiation. With rough weather, she had to get her sea legs, get trained for sail manouevres, and learn how to cook in a shifting ship's galley all at the same time. She was amazing in the kitchen, though -- except for some cranberry muffins, the entire 21 days saw no repeats in meals.
