An interesting quickie -- Sharky Extreme walks you through building a "value gaming" PC, with the price set at $1000US. You can start at the beginning, or jump straight to the component/price list, featuring an AMD and an Intel system.
Of note, that $1000US includes a 19" monitor, full speakers, and the operating system. The most expensive parts of the system? The monitor and the graphics card, in that order (well, the CPU is in there as well for the Intel system). Actually, those are the only components that are above $100US.

The graphics card sticks out because it belongs higher on its foodchain than the other components in theirs, by necessity for gaming. The monitor you can't begrudge because you know this is a great price.
But 1nt3l... hmmm, how do they justify that pricing?? Fear and intimidation it seems to me, nobody dares to cross them. They are by far the biggest semi company, and the biggest investment operation on earth. And don't forget their large and aggressive legal presence.
