According to Think Secret, new Apple laptops — both iBooks and PowerBooks — are being announced/released on Monday.
Now the trick will be to try to actually get one in short order, since they will likely be very hard to get hold of at first. I recently met the retail manager at MacStation here in Vancouver, so perhaps that will give me some pull.
I tend to buy at the beginning of the technology curve, and it has served me well. Especially since Macs have great resale value. I sold my last machine (the first G4/400) after 3 years for about half what I paid for it initially (to buy my current 15" FP iMac).
I'm not selling my machine this time. It's gotten to the point where Kate and I each need our own machine. And, I really need the portability factor. I pretty much never regard a laptop to people, because desktops are much better value, and unless you do some sort of consulting where you actually need to use a computer on the go, a desktop will work just fine.
So…wish me luck on Monday!
Getting the new 15" PowerBook
I originally called MacStation, but the person I spoke to on the phone didn't inspire confidence.
The guys at Simply called me back in short order, let me know it would be in Friday if not sooner, and promised to call when it arrived, with a big "reserved" sticker on the machine with my name on it.
Seems pretty…er…"simple" to me. We'll see how the purchase goes. Only thing that is going to get added right off the bat is a 512MB memory module -- everything else I need is included.
