WoW Open Beta

The World of Warcraft open beta is now ready for signup.

Once you've created your account, you download a small downloader (both Mac and Windows versions available). This is in fact a downloader which (as far as I can tell from the port ranges used) uses BitTorrent to download the over 2GB installer.

This is an obvious legal use of BitTorrent. And Shaw is throttling my bandwidth. Grrr.

Go buy it

I'm confused...just go to the store and buy the game. If you are looking for an illegal copy of WoW...you've come to the wrong place.

BFV, Halo 2 is where it's at.

Not sure about WoW or Everquest 2, but right now I'm having a hoot playing Battlefield Vietnam and Halo 2.

Halo 2 is actually a surprising letdown. They had what, four years for the next game they produced? The single-player game basically cuts off after a lame level with nothing more than a "to be continued" cinematic. They made a number of changes to various controls, like the Banshee. The banshee can now do various loops, but they removed the reverse thrust from it, so it is impossible to hover, which makes multiplayer maps with it very tricky. They also give you the Banshee fuel rod gun in single-player, but not in multi-player.

The list of missing creatures and vehicles is extensive. I think the list of maps is also cut way short, because there was supposed to be a snow-capable Warthog (The Human jeep), but there are no snow levels where it would be used.

There are all sorts of theories about this game. Halo was designed when Bungie was an independent Mac-first game developer. Halo 2 was designed after Bungie was a Microsoft pawn, and was released in late 2004, with XBox 2 supposed to be released next year.

Fortunately, H2 makes up for most of its flaws with XBox Live functionality. Halo made the XBox, but fell way short of it's true potential because they never re-coded it with XBox Live functionality.

I really don't like the prospect of having to get XBox 2 just to finish the game Halo 2 should have been, but Halo is the reason why I bought the XBox, so it will probably happen.  At least one computer in my home is going to be a current-gen PowerPC processor again. ;)

Boris: Now that prank on the Office Space DVD is actually semi-legit. ;)

(Shows a MacOS desktop with a load bar and the load window says "Scanning for viruses, hit Enter to continue." When I first saw it, I thought it was some conspiracy and XBox was running MacOS.)

But enough about that, on to BFV. BFV is tremendous fun, definitely as much fun in multiplayer as Halo should and could have been. BFV has a singleplayer where you play the bots on the same levels as the main game. The multiplayer is nothing short of spectacular, especially since the WW2 mod and the 1.2 Maps. You can fly a Huey gunship while cranking out 70s tunes and rocketing your enemy, or hop in a tank, or get a buddy and hop on a fricken Vespa scooter. There are choppers, planes (Mig 21, F4 Phantom, Mig-17, others), tanks, APCs, mobile artillery, fixed artillery. You can choose from 4 main character types (standard gunner, engineer, rocket/heavy, sniper) with great variety of abilities that all come in handy. Most of the hardcore PvP guys usually go for the regular gunner, or the VC engineer though.

This game is a ton of fun, especially with good buddies, or even just strangers. It gets even better when you quote random lines from the famous Vietnam movies, like Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, and Hamburger Hill, and it's great with just a few people, or a full server.

Evercrack 2

Speaking to my friend Brian Keeler who is an elite MSWin gamer ;-)  the fact that Everquest 2 is already released will have him playing it rather than WoW .  Of course , this is not an option for "Mac-fanatics" .

Not so open

World of Warcraft Open Beta Signups Closed - Nebu on 11/09/04

<http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/>

Actually , it appears that it was closed that same day after half a million people signed up ;-)

I think my preference is for it never to be released ... hours of fun ... maybe that is why I am trying to make Linux my primary computing environment .

"This download is expired!"

I went through the cumbersome signup process and downloaded the downloader (downloading downloaders makes the baby Jesus cry) and finally got a download screen with a window that repeats "This download is expired!" and then a window that asks me to open some ports which I did (and closed when giving up on the downloader). Inhale.

Did you manage to download the install successfully, Boris?

Still downloading

The Mac downloader seems to work fine. I've still got the substantial part of 2GB to download (likely 10hrs at the rate I'm getting).
