When Kate and I went to the mall I stopped in and bought Big Sugar's latest album. I'm actually not sure what it's called. It's technically a "Best of Big Sugar" album, but I think this is a limited edition called Hit and Run. It's a 2 CD set.
The first CD ("Hit") is 16 tracks from Sleep in Late ("No catfish bitin', at my bait"...slow, bluesy, Delta-rock) to Nicotina (crazy guitar-fueled rock thrills). Yup, Big Sugar has come a long way.
The second CD ("Run") is 55 minutes and 5 tracks of live songs. That's right -- fantastic classic Big Sugar, like Skull Ring - Joe Louis - Nashville Grass, the second track, which is 15 minutes long and blends one song into another in that oh-so-cool way that Big Sugar does at their live shows.
So, if you love Big Sugar, buy this album. If you don't know Big Sugar, this will give you a good taste of everything from early blues-style to late guitar rock.
P.S. Did I mention this is it? No more Big Sugar? Gordie is moving on to other things. Be interesting to see what happens -- I know I'll keep following him: he's a wicked guitar player and the way that every live show is almost a jam session is great. My guess he's going to get off the commercial train for a bit, maybe follow his one true reggae love. From the website:
This will be the last chance for fans to see Big Sugar as a 5-piece band. After 11 years, 6 albums (3 gold, 2 Platinum), Canadian album sales in excess of 400,000, over 1,500 shows performed and numerous top 10 singles Gordie Johnson is about to turn the corner and embark down a new road in 2004.
