I really like Dave Duncan's work with the King's Blades series, which started with The Gilded Chain. I've bought and read all the current books available, and was surprised to find this related novel at the library. It's about the "King's Daggers", and covers part of the Monster War and the behind-the-scenes work being done.
It definitely won't make much sense if you don't read at least part of the other series first (which overlap in time and space, so you can kind of read them in any order -- each book fills in blanks about the other ones). It does do a nice job of covering some details about the White Sisterhood and the system of magic which never really comes up in the other books.
If you enjoy the rest of Duncan's works, you'll rip through this in no time. It seems that I can now look forward to finding two more novels in this series: The Crooked House and Silvercloak.
