Ottawa

Cora's does have good breakfasts...more podcasts from the CBC, please

Dave was in Ottawa and had breakfast at Cora's. My guess is the one on Merivale, on his way up from the 401.

I had one of the best breakfasts of my life at a restaurant called Cora's in Ottawa. Maybe it was because I like Ottawa so much, or did some really great work on my walk just before breakfast, or maybe it's because the food was incredibly well prepared. I don't know but, it was pretty great

I noticed the mention because there was an interview on CBC recently with the founder of Cora's -- initially a completely family run chain in Quebec, and now a franchise. The food *is* really good. The point being, I wish that all of the CBC's programming was available as podcasts. Of course, when I played Episode #9 from the CBC Radio 3 podcast...it kind of sucked (I've liked the rest of them so far). But still...more, please.

Kate and I are Oktoberfest stars

Todd sent me an email with a link to the JIJ's Schnitzel House entry at RateBeer.com. Featuring a picture of Kate and I from last year.

Actually, the JIJ site has a bunch of pictures of people we know. Our gallery includes the picture on the RateBeer site -- I don't know who put it up there, but I imagine it came up from a Google search.

By the way, when Todd isn't asking questions here, he's over at the RateBeer site. Cap Flu is his handle there. And look -- there's even a beer called Boris.

Trevor Jones has a blog

My good friend (and former manager at Nortel) Trevor Jones has a blog.

I've also added him to my friends bundle, so you'll see items from him pop into the sidebar on the right from time to time. He's decided to start with music, and Rush.

I actually gained somewhat of an appreciation for Rush from a bunch of friends/roommates from Sechelt, where the spirit of Rush is apparently still strong. Just checking our music library, it does however appear that I have no Rush songs! Not even on the Bob & Doug Mckenzie album ("take off, to the Great White North, take off!"). Classic...

Walk along the canal

This is how I got woken up this morning. Karma was sleeping on my shoulder (which didn't wake me up) so Kate went and got the camera and took a picture...with the flash on. That did wake me up. Seeing as how I was up anyway, Kate kicked me out of bed (well, I got up to go to the bathroom, but by the time I got back, the bed was made, so that was pretty much it for sleeping). Then we went for a walk along the canal.

CinemaClock Movie Listings - Ottawa

Kate introduced me to this site, which seems to have a cleaner design than FilmCan, which is what I always used before. Even has the prices listed for some theaters, and an interesting comment score by gender- and age- grouping -- easy to tell if it's a "chick flick" that way :p

Ottawa Power Outage

Craziness! Shortly after 4pm yesterday, August 14th, 2003, the power went out for pretty much all of Ontario and what they call the "eastern seaboard" of the US -- including such major cities as New York, Boston, Cleveland, and Detroit.

So, as our apartment heated up (it only remains cold because our air conditioner runs 24/7...well, and it was 32°C plus humidex), Kate and I decided to go over to Anna, Rob, and Adam's place. They have a barbecue on their front porch, and it was actually a rather enjoyable evening. We had sausages and spinach salad (it was kind of a crazy dressing I made, with wasabi and ginger, but not tested enough to go in the recipes) and sat on the front porch drinking beer and listening to the wind up radio. CBC was doing a great job of dolling out reports, with some interesting "man-in-the-street" interviews thrown in.

Art Gallery and Byward Market

Paper Papier Business CardKate and I went for a nice walk around the city. We stopped in at Perfect Books to buy some poems by Colin Vincent (brother to Andrew) and also ended up getting some Celtic rubber stamps. The lady there told use we could get cool inks at a new shop, Paper-Papier. Well, new at that location -- looks like they have been here since 1982.

Welcome to the liquor store

Tim Bray writes about the re-vamping that the liquore stores in BC are going through.

Here in BC, at around the same time, presumably feeling threatened by the chill wind of threatened privatization, our government liquor stores decided to try to pull up their socks and get customer-oriented: more locations, longer opening hours, a bit more fun. By and large, they've done a pretty good job.

What time is it, anyway?

It's 8pm on Saturday night and I've just woken up.

Kate and I and a bunch of other people participated in the Cancer Relay for Life here in Ottawa. It was great fun.

It all started at 8pm yesterday, and went until 8am this morning. And now it's 8pm again, after we managed to sleep all day. I had been suffering from a lack of sleep over the last little while due to some late nights working, and this was the thing that put me over the top.

Le Grande Sucre (a.k.a. Big Sugar)

I went to the Big Sugar concert last night that closed out Tulip Festival. Kate went to a few things, but this year, we seem to have skipped most of it. When it started, it certainly wasn't very spring-like -- hardly any tulips out.

Yesterday, there was no doubt that summer had arrived. Well, spring, since in Ottawa, summer is unbearably hot, and spring is merely hot.
