Apparently, this game has been getting very good reviews. It is a two player, play-by-email game that is currently only available for Windows. Its creators are also the designers of the X-COM series.
You can download the game and play 3 games for free, as well as play "hotseat" games where you switch seats with a 2nd player. Subscriptions are $25 for 6 months.
Anyone know of other play-by-email games?

too expensive
this game is pretty sweet, but it is too expensive. when you can go out and buy warcraft III battlechest for $30 with unlimited online play, why should you pay $20 for the game + $25 subscription for just 6 months of play? LSN has minimal graphics, no music, no cutscenes, and no server requirements to play a game, there's no reason for a subscription fee.
Hard!
I played all the tutorials, and keep getting my a** kicked in the one "battle" practice. I'm hoping that human opponents will be easier...
